Problems caused by
misaligned teeth
Misaligned teeth are not just an aesthetic problem: they can have important consequences for your overall health. Here are the four main areas of impact.
-
1Chewing problemsCrooked teeth can cause malocclusions that impair chewing, making it hard to break down food properly.
-
2Hygiene problemsMisalignment makes proper daily hygiene difficult, encouraging plaque build-up and increasing the risk of cavities and gingivitis.
-
3Aesthetic problemsA misaligned smile can cause self-consciousness and undermine confidence in social situations.
-
4Joint and postural problemsMalocclusion can affect body posture and cause temporomandibular joint dysfunction, with neck and shoulder pain.
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that diagnoses, prevents and corrects these problems, bringing teeth and arches back into the right position with fixed or removable appliances.

The classes of
malocclusion
Tooth misalignment can produce different forms of malocclusion, which orthodontists classify into three main categories.
The treatment plan
After a thorough diagnosis including X-rays, digital impressions and photos of the smile, the orthodontist draws up a personalised treatment plan. In some cases extracting molars or premolars may be needed to achieve and maintain optimal alignment.
Treatment time varies with the complexity of the case: from a few months up to 2-3 years. Afterwards, a retainer is almost always needed to stabilise the result.
At what age should
the first check-up be?
It is essential to have an orthodontic check-up from an early age — ideally around 5-6 years old — to spot any treatment needs early and intervene at the most favourable moment for the development of the dental arches.
It's never too late: even in adulthood alignment problems can be corrected with excellent results. Modern orthodontic techniques — such as clear aligners — make treatment practically invisible and far more comfortable than in the past.
Interceptive orthodontics in childhood can greatly reduce the complexity and length of later treatment, by intervening while the bone is still growing and taking shape.
