What endodontics is

Endodontics is the dental specialty that treats the innermost part of the tooth: the dental pulp. When the pulp becomes irreversibly inflamed, because of deep decay, trauma or bacterial infection, the damaged tissue must be removed to save the tooth.

The main procedure is root canal treatment. Thanks to modern technology, it is a safe procedure, often painless, that restores full function to the treated tooth.

The three stages of root canal treatment

Root canal treatment follows a precise protocol in three key stages, each essential for the long-term success of the treatment.

  1. Pulp removal and canal shaping

Infected dentine and pulp residue are removed with dedicated instruments, giving the canal the best shape for disinfection and the final filling.

  2. Cleaning and disinfection

Irrigants such as sodium hypochlorite reduce the bacteria inside the root canals, breaking down necrotic tissue and harmful microorganisms.

  3. Three-dimensional sealing

The disinfected canal is sealed tightly in three dimensions with biocompatible materials, stopping bacteria from reinfecting the area.

What root canal treatment is for

The dental pulp is soft tissue full of blood vessels, nerves and connective cells at the centre of the tooth. When it becomes irreversibly inflamed, or even dies, the patient feels severe pain, sensitivity to hot and cold, or gum swelling.

When is root canal treatment needed? Very deep decay reaching the pulp, dental trauma, bacterial infections, fractures or long exposure of the pulp are the most common reasons.

Root canal treatment removes the pain at its source: by removing the infected pulp and sealing the canal, the tooth works again and can keep chewing for many years, especially if it is then restored with a ceramic crown.

04

Caring for a treated tooth

After root canal treatment it's essential not to chew hard food on the treated tooth until it is fully restored with a crown or inlay. Without the fluids and nutrients from the pulp, a treated tooth tends to become more brittle over time.

A tooth without pulp can still get new decay, but having lost sensitivity, it won't hurt as a warning sign. That's why regular check-ups and good daily oral hygiene matter even more.

Top Dental tip: After root canal treatment, protect your tooth with a ceramic crown. It can extend the tooth's life by decades and restores its natural look.
